Venezuela: Maduro is seized in a U.S. operation abroad and brought to the U.S. — without a Congressional mandate. Let’s be clear: no one needs to defend Maduro’s corrupt regime. That’s not the point. The point is method: sovereignty becomes optional, even for allies — and democracy is bypassed at home. Because this is not a collection of incidents. It’s a doctrine. The 2025 National Security Strategy makes it explicit: a “Trump Corollary” to the Monroe Doctrine, and a worldview that treats Europe with open contempt. Here’s the deeper pattern: techno-feudalism. When a handful of digital empires control cloud, platforms, payments, distribution, identity, and public discourse, states end up negotiating their sovereignty on infrastructures they don’t own. And here’s the dangerous illusion: “the deal.” We keep believing we can secure sovereignty with paper—contracts, clauses, compliance promises, “reversibility.” But U.S. big tech — and increasingly the U.S. state itself — has entered an era where contracts are treated as revocable, and extraterritorial power as normal. If the other side doesn’t respect the very sovereignty that makes contracts meaningful, paper cannot protect you. Only power can. Still: resistance is possible. With the Open Internet Project, we won 8 out of 8 lawsuits over more than a decade. Not by magic — but because law + industrial choices + political will still matter. France’s Senate warned back in 2013: the EU could become a “digital colony.” Many called it exaggerated. In 2026, it looks like understatement. Conclusion: Europe must act as Europe. This is not ideology — it’s economics. If you want sovereignty, stop funding your own dependency: buy European for critical digital infrastructure. Build, regulate, and defend.
