One mother immediately panicked. “Stay away from my daughter!” The next day, she called the police. They arrested him while he kept repeating: “I’m only trying to keep them safe.” That night, I saw his face on the news. He had suffered a heart attack after the arrest. The reporter explained why he was at the bus stop every morning. Years earlier, his daughter had been hit and killed while waiting for the school bus. She had stepped too close to the road. Her favorite candy was the same candy he handed out to the children. He gave it to them so they’d stay back from the curb. So no other parent would lose a child the way he did.
