I remember sleeping so lightly when I was pregnant. Even a pin drop would wake me up. And once I was awake, falling back asleep took forever. I would lie there feeling wide awake like I was ready to start my day at 3am. It gets better postpartum but I vividly remember trying to sound proof my bedroom as much as possible to avoid any interruption. There is a reason your sleep gets so light during pregnancy. Progesterone increases 100x which can fragment your sleep architecture. You spend more time in lighter sleep stages and less time in deep sleep. This starts well before the belly is big enough to make you physically uncomfortable, which is why a lot of women are surprised by how early the sleep problems begin. By the time the baby arrives, your sleep has already been restructured. Your hormones started that process months earlier. And for many women, you never fully return to what it was before pregnancy.
