This is a fabulous episode about R&R's and I was thinking about it today (as well as a recent episode of Shooting the Shit by TSNOTYAW) as I've been working on some line edits for my agent. Whether you're receiving feedback from a query or full, an R&R from an agent or editor, or line edits from an agent or editor, don't limit the feedback and edits to just that one scene! Think about the story as a whole and consider if you might need to make additional changes. For example: my agent wants me to change my FMC's interaction with a mirror and tease it out a bit over a few scenes. My first thought was to add a few brief and suspenseful interactions and then essentially copy and paste the existing interaction that I've already written....however, if I move that scene to a later placement in the story, the stakes may be different at that point and the interaction may need to be changed to make it more relevant and more impactful. My word of advice to other writers is to never lose sight of the bigger picture, and don't go for the quickest fix. Take the time you need to make your story the best version possible, and I can promise you will reap the rewards for your labor later!
