@cirnosad My take is. Its more of an Arab-Persian rivalry thing. If Iran was Sunni Arabs would be the same like today. People forget Persians when Iran was Sunni led the Sunni golden age and it ended with Safavid era that turned them Shia.

They were counting on Iran's Islamic/Shia morality to commit terrible crimes, but it was finally overcome by its Aryan code of vengeance.
