@greenandreac @CHinchliffMP @LabourList All that would do is redistribute housing, not change the housing shortage. If a family of 4 are living in a former council house. If you buy back that council house and evict them, and put someone in urgent need in that house instead, all you have done is add a new urgent need.

Private developers drove the housing crisis. Now they want deregulation: lower quality but still unaffordable, freezing homes in flood-risk areas. Labour will carry the blame if we don’t reject the race to the bottom. My op-ed for @LabourList 👇🏻

🔴 Historic Record of Regime's Murder – Atefeh Naami Tortured to Death – November 2022 Atefeh Naami, 37-year-old architect from Ahvaz, lived independently in Azimieh, Karaj. A poetic, artistic woman who loved to become a beauty blogger and was always helping the poor, she joined the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising fearlessly, protesting nightly in streets without hijab and chanting from her balcony. On 21 November 2022, during bloody Karaj protests, she was abducted by security forces. After five days of silence, her decomposed body was found on her balcony on 26 November, wrapped in a blanket with a gas hose forced into her mouth, staged as suicide. Family evidence contradicts this: severe bruises on thighs, chest, and back (signs of beating and sexual assault); semi-naked body in cold weather; spotless apartment despite open balcony; neighbors heard screams of a girl being beaten and thrown down. Initial coroner called it "premeditated murder," but judge was replaced. Authorities pressured family to stay silent, coerced dropping complaints, rushed secret burial before 9 a.m. in Ahvaz under heavy security. Her sister Leila and her brother Mohammad Amin rejected suicide, sharing last voice notes of Atefeh chanting "Death to the Dictator" from her balcony. Atefeh's abduction, torture (including sexual violence), murder, body staging, and intimidation of her family shows the regime's brutality against defiant women. After Iranian missile strikes hit the UAE in early March 2026, thousands of expats rushed to leave Dubai. But as flights filled, a quieter crisis unfolded: hundreds of pets were abandoned. Dogs were found tied to lamp posts, left in empty apartments, or dumped near shelters already at capacity. Rescue volunteers reported being overwhelmed. One said she received 27 messages in a single day from owners asking her to take their animals. Vets were flooded with requests to euthanize pets whose owners couldn't or wouldn't take them. Rescue groups like K9 Friends Dubai and War Paws called the situation heartbreaking, especially in one of the wealthiest cities on earth. The crisis drew sharp criticism toward influencers and expats who built entire brands around luxury Dubai living but left their animals behind without a plan when things turned dangerous.

He went out to save a life… and never came home. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Tyler Jaggers, a rescue swimmer stationed at Air Station Astoria, has died after suffering critical injuries during a rescue mission off the Pacific Northwest coast. On February 27, a Coast Guard helicopter crew launched more than 120 miles offshore near Cape Flattery to evacuate a mariner suffering a medical emergency. During the dangerous nighttime rescue, Jaggers was seriously injured while carrying out the mission. For days he fought for his life surrounded by his fellow Coast Guard family. On March 5, he passed away. Tyler joined the Coast Guard in 2022 and served in Astoria beginning in 2024. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and advanced in rank. Coast Guard rescue swimmers live by a simple but powerful motto: “So Others May Live.” Tyler Jaggers lived those words until the very end. The Oregon Coast community is mourning tonight. My wife Yara and I were talking about everything we have gone through during the war in Gaza—how we survived death more than once, and how we were displaced from place to place, from one tent to another. Walter didn’t resist. He simply allowed himself to be lifted, too weak to hold himself up any longer. It was as if he finally understood that someone had come for him. But the moment he was carried into the veterinary clinic, his strength gave out completely. His small body collapsed from exhaustion after holding on for so long. On this International Women’s Day, we remember Nazanin Esmi Khani. She was only 18. Nazanin was a high school senior from Mohammadiyeh in Qazvin province. She loved photography and worked at a small studio while finishing school. She played guitar and setar. Friends and family remember her as joyful, creative, and full of life. On the night of January 8, she was returning home with her parents when a sniper opened fire. The bullet struck Nazanin from behind while she stood beside her father. She collapsed in his arms. A car posing as an emergency vehicle arrived and took her away. Later, the family learned it was not real medical help. It was connected to the same system responsible for the violence. The cruelty did not end there. To receive Nazanin’s body, authorities demanded hundreds of millions of tomans and even took the gold jewelry she had with her. The family was reportedly told they should also bring “a box of sweets” when collecting her body. Nazanin was not a threat. She was a teenager with dreams, music, and a future that should have been hers. On a day meant to celebrate women around the world, remember the young women of Iran whose lives are stolen simply for existing under a system that fears them.
