@Mimi_Luxemburg When you've read Black Jacobins and any other books on the revolution, I recommend you reread Black Jacobins again. There's a considerable amount in subtext that isn't immediately necessarily obvious on first reading! I still find something new having read at least five times ๐Ÿ“š

The future of the Revolution from 1802 onwards turned on the toss of a coin. Had Napoleon enshrined Toussaintโ€™s constitution, which he eventually regretted not doing, then that multicultural colony could (emphasis on could) have signalled a new era of Caribbean history.

It was a white abolitionist who unexpectedly - even unexpected to himself - decreed abolition, albeit in tenuous circumstances. Toussaint build a state apparatus that included all races. This is not an exclusive story of black versus white. Itโ€™s deeply complicated, like life.

You might ask why a series on the Haitian Revolution is important? The answer is that itโ€™s a forgotten, largely shunned period of history. Itโ€™s not well known in the west largely because the western world does not want you to remember it because of its role. #1791project

Too much assumed knowledge, which means thereโ€™s a lot - and I mean a lot - that youโ€™d miss if you have no prior understanding of the Revolution, French feudal society, the French Revolution, or Caribbean, colonial & post-colonial African history
