Walid Regragui was the dream appointment for Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). And so is his replacement. Regragui was a champion of the transformation the FRMF had made, a man who embodied the values of hard work and sacrifice they were so keen to instil in their players. Regragui's father was a builder and he grew up on a council estate in the suburbs south of Paris, but studied economics at university. The same ethics powered his football career. Regragui worked his way from the fifth tier of French football all the way to Ligue 1 and, of course, represented Morocco on the international stage. Later, his development through the newly-available coaching licenses meant he was a direct product of the new professional environment that FRMF had built. The fact these qualifications led to repeated success in Africa proposition Regragui as a proof of concept; hard evidence the continent could produce elite coaches of their own. The transformation of the men's national team can be highlighted through a comparison of Regragui the player and Regragui the manager. In 44 appearances for his country, Regragui won 21 games - a 47.7% win rate. In 50 matches on the touchline, it was 70%. Those 35 wins also included a world-record winning streak of 19 games. In 2022, Regragui made history as the first-ever African manager to reach the quarter-final stage before Morocco became the first Arab country and the first African country to reach a World Cup semi-final. He also captured the unifying pan-nationalist sentiment that binds Moroccan-born players with the diaspora. "For this I have fought [โ€ฆ] Before this World Cup, we had a lot of problems about the guys born in Europe and guys not born in Morocco [...] Today, we have shown that every Moroccan is Moroccan." The fallout from the infamous defeat to Senegal has ultimately led to Regragui's departure. "We have missed the chance of a lifetime." At first, it seems that way. A 20-year wait for a place at the World Cup; a 22-year wait for an Africa Cup of Nations final; Morocco's recent history has been defined in large part by waiting. Waiting, and building. The Atlas Lions ended 2025 ranked 11th in the FIFA World Rankings, their highest-ever year-end rank. 16 years ago, Morocco had plummeted to their nadir: by the end of 2010 the Atlas Lions ranked 79th in the world and fell as low as 95th in that cycle. A day after the Africa Cup of Nations final defeat to Senegal, they secured a single digit ranking for the first time in their history: Morocco became the 8th best team in men's international football. That Africa Cup of Nations final felt like the "chance of a lifetime" because that is what history said it would be. However, the transformation of Moroccan football at all levels, across all ages, across men's and women's football, means that this chance will come again soon. We know now it will not come again for Regragui, yes. However, in Mohamed Ouahbi, Morocco have another dream appointment. Born in Belgium into an indigenous Moroccan Amazigh family - Ouahbi became the first-ever 'foreign' coach to lift the FIFA Under-20 World Cup when the Atlas Cubs defeated Argentina in Chile in 2025. Unlike Regragui, he was not a professional player and therefore never cemented his Moroccan nationality by representing the country. Instead, he developed his coaching expertise in Europe, specialising as a youth coach during a 17-year career at Anderlecht, during which he obtained the UEFA Pro License. During the victorious Under-20 World Cup campaign, Ouahbi's side displayed all the hallmarks of the Mohammed VI Academy brand; the same traits that became synonymous with Regragui's 2022 World Cup semi-finalists. Both teams were well-organised, compact when necessary, and ran hard in and out of possession. The intangibles of the collective were striking. But so was the squad building. The triumphant Under-20 World Cup squad was built on the values promoted by Mohammed VI Football Academy and Ouhabi's tactics were designed to celebrate the strengths of each individual. Those concepts are relatively simple, but their clarity and successful execution was an indicator of a football institution at the top of its game. Under Regragui, Morocco shocked the globe by making the final four of the 2022 World Cup. Four years later, don't be surprised if Ouhabi's young side achieves a similar feat.
