@Guy_mck21 @Ella147705 + 2) mechanisms are, if they dont communicate how is anyone supposed to know....
English

@hereforassign @Ella147705 Your feelings are valid but let me hold your hand while saying this…..it took Ilya almost dying for them to talk. Shane paid no true attention to him and knew Ilya was unhappy before but ignored it. If that TALK AFTER the plane incident never happened I don’t think they’d be tgr
English

@Guy_mck21 @Ella147705 +the fact that we dont know what shane is going through is actually reminiscent of how people in relationships actually act.... we dont know what is up with him (and he doesnt knows what s up in ilya's mind) they dont have any context or baseline to how ilya acts, what his copin+
English

@Guy_mck21 @Ella147705 yeah shane takes ilya for granted and ilya does not know how to draw boundaries. neither of them know how to communicate. both can be faulty thats what i'm saying. i jsut think one character gets more grace because he is more fleshed out.
English

@StorrieOfTheSun @hereforassign they each have things to learn from each other: Shane (letting go of control) / Ilya (learning he can be his own person AND love Shane at the same time). in the end, they both do it, with flaws and all. and that's why their relationship grows strong. 😊
English

I’ve never voiced this. It’s always been my deepest, darkest, most shameful thought while reading the TLG. Because I know Shane loves Ilya. But he would’ve been happy to go on existing in that set up, even though he sensed Ilya was unhappy, because it worked for him.
Ella@Ella147705
Ilya was too committed in a relationship to a person that wouldn’t have picked him over his career and only did so coz the team started treating him very badly
English

@hereforassign I agree with you to a certain extent. But he didn’t choose Shane out of need. He chose him out of love. He definitely gives too much of himself in relationships. That’s why I love the Galina scenes and hope Jacob does justice to them.
English

@PeePinG_27 in that case its insincere character building T0T and missed representation?
English

@hereforassign His autism's revealed AFTER TLG came out, him being forced to be model minority didn't even get enough highlight in the book, heck, if not for mention of Japanese in 2-3 sentences, i would've just thought Shane is a 'common' Wasian with regular yt privilege. It's on RR, not Shane
English

@StorrieOfTheSun he needed to learn to be his own person, and build his self-concept beyond what he has to offer to people. he needed to learn to communicate his needs. but i agree shane could ve been more perceptive? or someone around him could ve noticed...
English

@StorrieOfTheSun ilya committing himself too much is not a good thing.. or a thing to valorise him for. its codependency, he would ve done it for anyone, he did it for everyone (his fam for eg). it is ilya's coping mechanism with that fact he feels like he doesnt deserve to be loved +
