2023 was a heartbreak. (Almost disbelief. We kept waiting for some heroic moment that would swing the match back towards us. And then … the reality started hitting again). 2019 was pain. But it wasn’t as heartbreaking as 2023 coz we have almost given up after those 5 wickets and then hope was given .. and then .. that runout. 2003 was … Traumatic. Just because of the way we lost the final. You can actually call it a generational trauma. It didn’t leave us for weeks. Some of us (myself included… Months). But…. For those who have watched before that … The one that hurt the most (coz there was hurt, pain, anger, frustration … and shame… all happening together)… It was … “1996”. Despite the awesome victory in the QF against Pakistan, The prematch concern (even fear for many)… about Jayasuriya and Kalu.. and then 1st over, 2nd ball … Kalu gone. Batsmen cross.. and then 3rd ball, Jayasuriya gone. It felt like we had already won. then .. Arvinda’s counterattack .. Srilanka posting a decent score … and then.. Our collapse. No problem … Sachin is there. He’ll save us. And then that dreadful moment of the ball hitting his thighpad (of Jaysuriya’s balling) Sachin losing sight of the ball momentarily which unfortunately trickled backwards … with momentum … and Kalu breaks the stumps. The Shock! The Disbelief! And then … the shocking behaviour at one of the most revered grounds. The Eden audience disrupting the match. Kambli crying. Match … won by Srilanka (rightfully so). That WC match… THAT Match hurt the most.
