Anecdotal evidence of FAQPage affecting AI citations? same content with no schema would probably give the same effect.

I've seen a few posts claiming that adding FAQs/FAQ Schema is super valuable for AI Search. Fun fact: this has been an SEO tactic for a long time already! Here are two articles I wrote about this topic on the @amsiveagency blog in 2019, and the corresponding @Moz article I wrote (linked in the thread). My articles explained how to approach FAQ content, things to know about FAQ structured data, and the impact all of this had on CTR. It also included this guidance in the last paragraph: "Provide meaningful answers to the questions you present on FAQ pages, don’t abuse Google’s policies around advertising within the answers, and leverage any links you place within your answer content with care. Link to relevant pages on your site only when it makes sense to do so. Otherwise, Google may take this fantastic SEO opportunity away from us." Fast forward 6 years later to 2025: turns out, Google *did* take this opportunity away from SEOs, likely due to abuse and spam. Who could have seen that coming? 😅 Now FAQ Schema rich results are only available for certain sites (government sites, etc.). In other words - Google has already detected and nullified the SEO spam and manipulation happening within this search feature. Therefore, I would be cautious about the guidance to spam/misuse FAQs now "because of AI search." Many people providing this type of advice don't have the context or experience to know what happened to thousands of sites during the Helpful Content Update, March 2024 Core Update, etc. Jumping on bandwagons and repeating the same tactics as many other sites for SEO/AI Search visibility (without considering user experience) is a really great way to get demoted by an algorithm update or penalized for low-quality content. When thousands of sites employ the same "SEO tactics," it's a great way to create a footprint that Google later treats as spam. If your site is treated as spam by Google/Bing, it will be much harder to appear in AI citations later on. My advice: yes, you can provide meaningful FAQs on your site (and the Schema if you choose to, even though it no longer generates rich results) if they are truly helpful to your users. That said, maybe don't spam this with lots of longtail/PAA/fan-out queries if you want to avoid ending up in Google Jail. I'm being asked what I think regarding today. I'm glad military aid to Ukraine is restored. And I'm thankful for that. I'm glad that the talks were productive, the right words were found and steps forward were taken. Ukraine has shown we strive for peace. Now it's Russia's turn. What scenario has the Kremlin and Russian diplomacy prepared? My experience tells me they will drag negotiations on and increase confrontation. We will see what happens tomorrow.
