BYD, the company the world fears most in the EV race, just posted its eighth consecutive month of sales decline. That is the longest losing streak in its history. China's largest electric vehicle maker sold approximately 321,000 new energy vehicles in April 2026, a drop of 15.5% compared to the same month last year. The previous record for consecutive monthly declines was six months, set in 2019 after government EV subsidies were cut. BYD has now surpassed that record with no clear bottom in sight. The pressure is coming from two directions at once. Domestically, Chinese consumers are shifting away from entry-level EVs toward premium models, and BYD's affordable lineup under 150,000 yuan is facing intensifying competition from Geely and Leapmotor. Q1 2026 profits posted their steepest decline since 2020. Trade-in subsidies for entry-level EVs and plug-in hybrids have been reduced, accelerating the market shift. The one bright spot is overseas. BYD's international sales hit a record 130,000 vehicles in April, up 35% year-on-year. Europe, Southeast Asia, and Latin America are becoming increasingly critical growth engines as the domestic market stalls. This matters beyond BYD itself. The company is effectively the benchmark for China's entire EV industrial strategy. It received billions in state subsidies to achieve global scale and undercut competitors on price. Now it is losing ground at home to other subsidized domestic competitors, while simultaneously being hit with 45% EU tariffs and 100% US tariffs abroad. The CCP built its EV champion to dominate the world. The world pushed back.
