🦠 LA VACUNA CONTRA EL VPH ELIMINA LAS MUERTES POR CÁNCER DE CERVIX EN MUJERES JÓVENES Imagina que una vacuna rutinaria en la adolescencia borra casi por completo una de las principales causas de muerte por cáncer en mujeres jóvenes. Eso es lo que ha ocurrido en Inglaterra tras la introducción del programa de vacunación contra el virus del papiloma humano (VPH) en 2008. El análisis de datos de mortalidad poblacional entre 2001 y 2024 muestra que, en mujeres de 20-24 años con cobertura vacunal del 88-90 %, no se registró ninguna muerte por cáncer de cérvix entre 2020 y 2024, frente a las 23 esperadas según las tasas históricas. En cohortes anteriores con cobertura del 63-87 %, la reducción fue del 69-80 %. En total, se han evitado alrededor de 200 muertes hasta finales de 2024. Esto significa que las generaciones vacunadas a tiempo están protegidas de forma muy efectiva contra el cáncer de cérvix causado por el VPH, con un impacto real en la supervivencia. Los autores destacan que estos resultados apoyan el objetivo de la OMS de eliminar el cáncer de cérvix como problema de salud pública si se mantiene y amplía la cobertura vacunal.
