Although these kids might slightly do better than other black kids they are still well behind their white peers.

As much as the left wants to fuss about “wealthy” getting vouchers, for more than 40 years, NC has provided universal vouchers for NC residents that attend private universities, and nobody claims that is destroying the UNC System ….

Vouchers take money that could go to adequately compensating teachers. You want to advocate for black and brown students? Advocate paying the teachers of black and brown students a living wage.

But it’s not lost traction - 70% of the electorate agrees with me. It’s not about who deserves it. It’s about rights. If that mom has the right to choose this mom Has the right to make the same choice. The state is per pupil spending. It’s not the states responsibility to determine who’s worthy or not. So you make it available to all.

Heck, I agree with the idea of expanded school choice. It’s when you start peeling apart what that means, it becomes less popular.

Please don’t speak for mothers that you do not know. Please don’t make implicit biases about our community. This program is not new and for ten years the people you say it cannot help actually helped tens of thousands of people of color and they were all on income limits. Currently 43% of families of color on free and reduced lunch utilize the program.

I don’t and shouldn’t presume to understand and use any demographic as a uniform group. Probably should have said “most” or “many” instead of implying all. That was a mistake.

However, “poor black mothers” still can’t afford private schools when the vouchers only cover 30-50% of (most) private school’s tuition. So now they are back to underfunded and understaffed public schools…which id argue is worse

To be clear, you still didn’t say it. If you believe in the legislation, you and other republicans should be bold enough to explicitly say “Millionaires who already send their kids to private school should receive approximately $4500 to pay for said private school.”
