@GadiAleks I think I misunderstood this definition. When they say random variable, I had assumed they mean each x is a random possibility every time you "run" the summation. I'm guessing that's wrong then? :) Sorry, I'm new to this.

(this will be the week of ill-informed probability questions) When defining an expected value, why do you need to invoke random numbers? Why not just sum all the value*probability possibilities over the domain?
