@robin_j_brooks Both Biden and Trump had ignored Iranian Oil sanctions during their Presidencies including oil to China under the guise it was coming from Malaysia. For the soul purpose of keeping the price of gas down at the pumps. Doubt they would enforce embargo. What a mess.

Best off-ramp for this war is to embargo Iran's oil. At $110, oil prices already price a meaningful probability that Iran's 2.5 million barrels per day get shut in. So risk of a big spike in oil prices is manageable, while Iran's economy would implode... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/embargo-iran

Respecting the dignity of people. #theCanadianWay
Dimitris Soudas 🇨🇦⚜️🇬🇷☦️ 13.12.1943@DimitrisSoudas

Sir, This isn't about holding one person to a higher standard than another. It's about respecting the law and respecting Canadians. This country was built on a pact in 1867 — a deal between peoples. At its core was a commitment that Canada would be built on two official languages, English and French, and that both would be respected at the highest levels of public life. That's not symbolic. It's part of our constitutional DNA. Air Canada is not just any company. It's bound by the Official Languages Act — and that's not optional. It's a legal obligation to serve Canadians in both official languages, especially in moments of crisis. When lives are lost, language isn't a secondary concern. It's dignity. It's respect. It's the ability to reach grieving families in the language of their heart. One of the pilots was a francophone. His family deserved to be addressed in French. Full stop. As for the Governor General, let's be equally clear. Someone who can't speak French should never have been appointed to one of the highest offices in this country. That decision ignored the spirit of 1867 and sent the wrong signal about what we value as a nation. But one mistake doesn't justify another. And frankly, suggesting that learning enough French to deliver a few sentences would somehow detract from safety just isn't credible. After decades in Quebec, a francophone spouse, and hundreds of hours of tutoring, the issue is no longer time. It's will. This isn't about politics. It's about honouring the foundation of this country and showing basic respect to the people who live in it.

I await Governor General Mary Simon's condolence video in French. Why do the Liberals hold the CEO of Air Canada to a higher standard of bilingualism than their own appointee as Governor General, who hasn't learned French after four years in the role? TBH, I would rather have the CEO of our flagship carrier focusing his scarce time on safety and reliability than language training.

Air Canada has gone 43 (!) years without a fatal incident. My entire life up to this point has been lived in a country where the flag carrier never got a single person killed in a crash. The record is a totem to what serious people can accomplish. So naturally, Mark Carney is screaming at them to instead focus on nonsense.

My BNN Bloomberg conversation from earlier today for those who missed it. Talked about the state and trajectory of the Iran War, the growing physical-sentiment disconnect in oil markets, and how nothing really matters unless traffic through the Strait of Hormuz resumes—soon.

Sir, We understand that the French language seems to irritate you, as though it were an inconvenience rather than a foundational element of this country. But the facts remain. One of the pilots was a Quebecer, a francophone. His family and loved ones deserved to hear a message in French. Out of respect. Out of dignity. Out of basic humanity. And beyond that, there is the law. Air Canada is subject to the Official Languages Act. It is a law, sir. Not a recommendation. Not optional. An obligation. This does not diminish the tragedy or the suffering of the victims. It simply affirms that in Canada, respect for both official languages is not conditional, especially in moments of national grief. And if the message had been delivered only in French, you would be asking the same question. So let’s ask it honestly, both ways. Because respect cannot be one-sided.

(Bloomberg) -- Futures for oil and stocks worth billions of dollars changed hands just 15 minutes before a social media post from US President Donald Trump sent crude prices tumbling and equities soaring.

Iran’s Kharg Island as seen **today** by the @CopernicusEU Sentinel-2 satellite. Iran is loading multiple tankers, exporting oil and making $$$ — now, with the help of the White House. The idea that Trump admin is using Iranian oil barrels against Iran is simply ridiculous.

So many problems with Bessent's Iranian oil on water claim here. But a big one is on the 140 million barrel figures he claims, which misunderstands how oil on water (OOW) actually works. If Iran is exporting oil, as it continues to do, it'll always have oil on water—as long as those tankers are on water they're in that volume. 2025 buildup was *excess* OOW, of which Iran's is nearer 60 million than 140 million barrels. To draw down *all* of Iran's OOW, you'd need to stop their exports (e.g., take out Kharg Island), which thus far Trump has been unwilling to do. Bad numbers misleading oil market situation leading to bad wartime policy.

@LoveMy7Wood Bizarre that it has sold off. Energy/Oil will be a catalyst in big increases in inflation. Gov’ts will be printing more money to pay for consequences of war. Just weird.

Excellent analysis from @robin_j_brooks on gold price being “weird” at this moment in history. I agree with him that this aberration will undoubtedly change. It just does not make sense especially how this war threatens the world economy.
Robin Brooks@robin_j_brooks

Gold is now down 15% from before war with Iran began. This is the biggest challenge so far to the debasement trade. I've become a convert to this trade and think it's driven by reckless fiscal policy across much of the G10. But this drawdown is large... robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/is-gold-no-l…
