These developments highlight a shift in educational success in the South, with Mississippi and Alabama leading the way in innovative reforms and improved student results. Mississippi and Alabama improved school performance through reforms such as early literacy laws requiring phonics, stricter retention and promotion policies, universal literacy screeners, and rigorous curricula. Additionally, both states implemented strict disciplinary policies to maintain order in classrooms, which contributed to better learning environments.
