I do wonder what it would take for Average Joe commuter to reach out to his next-door neighbour and discuss the fact that they both commute daily to the same general area—and perhaps there are some efficiencies that could be had.

One benefit of owning a vehicle that can haul upwards of 7 or 8 ppl could be carpooling and splitting gas, yet the majority of these vehicles are near empty.
This tells me that **for these people***, the price of gas is not too expensive yet.

I’ve been counting and calculating average vehicle occupancy while walking to work lately.
It’s consistently 1.1 people per vehicle, and most are mid-sized SUVs.

For 15 years, Canadians have overwhelmingly purchased large SUV’s and pickup trucks knowing the price of gas will always increase and be volatile. Maybe instead of subsiding that, we invest in public transit so people have the option to not drive everywhere for everything.

The goal is to balance the scales in the name of reducing the negative externalities that come with private vehicles being the overwhelming way people get around—of which there are many.

Mayor Hidalgo transformed Paris by showing residents and visitors alike how wonderful a city can be it is built for people, not cars.
Residents voted today to further that mission. A quieter city, a healthier city, a livable city.
Cities everywhere must strive for the same.

Governments at all levels need to invest in serious alternatives.
This means wide sidewalks, protected bike lanes, and fast public transit.
Anything less is a disservice, and investment in the past, and setting their jurisdiction up for failure.

The answer is because in most places, these alternative options are just simply bad. Either dangerous or slow or uninteresting or unpleasant.
Decades of car-centric investments have made us reliant on an energy source extracted from the depths of hell to simply go buy groceries.

How long has it been since you last took a drivers test? 10, 20, 30+ years? Now think of how many additional cyclists are on the road since then.
This should absolutely be a mandatory part of all driver education. Too many drivers pass cyclists too closely. This costs lives.

Paris makes 300 school streets traffic free. This is so obviously beneficial BUT POSSIBLE BECAUSE PARIS already has dense, walkable urbanism US cities will struggling with massive quality of life improvements like this as long as they prioritize low-density, car-oriented development
