なぜ、人文系研究書が初版の文字制限のある論文より価値があるのか、東南アジアの古代史についてのある歴史地理学の英語著書を例に取ります。 　英語圏著者の東南アジア研究で、古代史の場合，第一に参照するべきは漢籍史料です。まだ現地語は知られていません。中華圏にとっても東南アジア＝南海、南蛮は異国異文化ですので、紀元前後からの各種地誌の漢籍を調べて、現地の地名，人名，を無理に漢字に置き換えている記述を解析して，場所の比定するのが基礎の基礎です。 　この場合、漢字文化圏の日本の東洋史は有利で「東西交渉史」というジャンルが長くあり，漢籍読み訓練を受けていると、論文中に原文そのままを示しても読み手は理解できました。(今は少なくとも現代日本語に訳したものはつけます) 　「扶南」「林邑」「赤土」「狼牙脩」「真臘」などと言う地名が並び、その風俗などについて詳しく書いたものもあります。古代史ではインド文化の影響の強い国々が多く、「王は上半身裸で、金の首飾りを身につけ、外出する時は竹の輿に乗る」などと書いてあります。肌を見せるのは中華の基準では礼を欠くので、「風俗は悪」と付記してあってニヤリとしますが、上記の地名も現地音のままか、土地の見かけの表現なのか、不明のまま混じっています。 　英語圏の東南アジア古代史研究者も漢籍を読める人が論文を書きますが、大変に困るのは、地名人名を現代の中国語音(北京語)で書いてしまうことです。 　論文ではやはりページ数制限があるために、古参の「Journal of the Malayan Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (JMBRAS)」や「Journal of the Indian Archipelago and Eastern Asia (JIAS)」などは、長尺の論文や報告を10ほどの部分に分けて連投して来ました。後にそれを集めてOxford Univ. Pressなどが著書にするわけです。 　その中で、「The Golden Khersonese : studies in the historical geography of the Malay Peninsula before A.D. 1500」というPaul Wheatleyの初版が1961年の本があります。　　　出版者を変えて、何度も再販され、マラヤ大は権利を買って大学テキストとして学生版に安く売ってます。初版は22万円してます。 　なぜこの本が半世紀を超えて，英語圏で使われ参照されているかと言うと、東南アジア古代史の史料解説の引用部分で内容解説とともに漢籍原文を載せているからです。 　漢字固有名詞のローマ字表記(中国語)も丁寧に書かれているので、世界中の東南アジア古代史研究者がReprintを入手していると思います。 　著書の解釈そのものは、比定が誤っていたり、いまだに不明であったり、のちの考古学成果でインド系言語の碑文が出てきたりして、「結論」はそのまま用いることはありません。 　しかし、ほとんどこの本のみが漢籍原文と併記しているので、価値があります。我々が英語で漢籍の古代地名を書くときにも役立ちますw この本に漢籍原文がなければ、もっと短く、本の寿命も短かったでしょう。歴史地理学の研究書の使い方の一つです。
