CHILDREN WHO SPEND MORE TIME ON SCREENS ARE MORE LIKELY TO EXPERIENCE SPEECH DELAYS. A study presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting followed nearly 900 toddlers aged 6 to 24 months. Researchers from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto found a clear association: the more time young children spent using handheld screens like smartphones, tablets, and electronic games, the more likely they were to experience delays in expressive speech—how children use sounds and words to communicate. For each additional 30 minutes of daily handheld screen time, there was a 49 percent increased risk of expressive speech delay. Other forms of communication—gestures, social interactions, body language—were unaffected. The impact was specific to expressive speech. The leading theory is displacement. Early childhood is a critical window for language development. Toddlers learn to speak through face-to-face interaction: listening to caregivers, watching facial expressions, imitating sounds, pointing at objects, and engaging in back-and-forth conversations. Every minute spent staring at a screen is a minute not spent in those crucial interactions. A separate study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Pediatrics found that higher levels of screen time in one-year-olds were directly associated with developmental delays in communication and problem-solving by ages two through four. The more screen time, the more likely the delays. Multiple studies confirm the pattern. One survey of over 1,000 parents found that toddlers who watched more videos said fewer words. For each additional hour of video time per day, eight- to 16-month-old infants said an average of six to eight fewer words. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization recommend limiting screen time to one hour per day for children ages 2 to 5. For children under 18 months, they recommend avoiding screen time altogether, except for video chatting. Not all screen time is equal. Passive screen time—where a child sits silently watching a video—is very different from active screen time, where a parent watches with the child, talks about what's happening, asks questions, and makes connections to real life. The problem is that for children under two, even educational content doesn't translate well. Young toddlers lack the symbolic understanding to apply what they see on a two-dimensional screen to the three-dimensional world. During the first few years of life, human interaction is irreplaceable. Screens can't teach language the way a parent can. They can't respond to a child's needs, adjust their speech based on reactions, or create the thousands of small exchanges that build communication skills. If your child has had significant screen time, speech delays identified early can often be addressed with intervention. The sooner support is provided, the better the outcomes. The research is clear: limit handheld screen time for toddlers, especially passive viewing. Prioritize face-to-face interaction, reading together, playing, and talking. When screens are used, make them interactive. Watch together. Talk about what you're seeing.
