Several Feared Trapped After Building Collapse in Kibera

Several people are feared trapped after a building collapsed in the Highrise area of Kibera, Nairobi, on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident was confirmed by the Kenya Red Cross Society, which said emergency response teams had been dispatched to the scene and rescue operations were underway.
“A building collapse has been reported in the Highrise area of Kibera. Emergency response teams are currently on site conducting search and rescue operations,” the agency said in a statement.
At the time of reporting, the exact number of people trapped under the debris remained unclear, with responders continuing efforts to locate and rescue victims.
The collapse adds to a growing list of similar incidents in Nairobi and other parts of the country in recent months.
In March 2026, a building under construction collapsed in Westlands, leaving one person dead and several others injured after trapping workers at the site. Earlier in January, another building under construction in South C also collapsed, resulting in two fatalities.
Experts have attributed the rising cases of building collapses to a combination of poor construction practices, developer negligence and weak enforcement of building regulations.
The Institution of Engineers of Kenya has previously raised concerns over the trend, warning that regulatory lapses and non-compliance with standards continue to pose risks to public safety.
Rescue operations in Kibera were still ongoing at the time of publication, with authorities yet to provide further details on casualties or the cause of the collapse.
