Trekkies and longtime fans of 1990s and early-2000s sci-fi, people who suddenly found themselves starved for good science-fiction television. We went into Discovery with massive hope. After years of waiting for a new Trek series, this felt like the one that could finally deliver. Instead, we all ran into the same wall: deep, bitter disappointment. It wasn’t just one problem. The show tried to rewrite established Star Trek history by introducing technology that would fundamentally alter the entire future timeline, from The Next Generation all the way through Voyager. On top of that, it radically reinvented the Klingons, turning one of the franchise’s most beloved and iconic races into… whatever that was supposed to be. Credit where credit is due, though. Jason Isaacs and Michelle Yeoh were phenomenal in Season 1. Their performances crackled with intensity, and the Mirror Universe arc remains the undisputed high point of the entire series. Unfortunately, even that brilliance couldn’t save the show. I never watched beyond Season 2, I could not force myself.

Star Trek: Discovery initially had 10 million viewers, a magnitude beyond anything Trek gets now. It's clear there's fans who are hungry for Star Trek and will give it a chance initially. What went wrong?

The distinction between engineering and magic is entirely a modern linguistic conceit. To the ancients, a wizard, a magus, a sorceror, was not a man who commanded forces outside the laws of nature. He was a man who commanded the forces of nature, by manipulating them through his understanding of natural law. But the modern word for a man who commands the universe by understanding its laws is "engineer". Yes, the ancient sorceror would try to commune with the spirits of the dead, or read the destiny of kings in the stars, or perform fertility rites to make the crops grow, but this wasn't some special supernatural discipline to him. This was simply his model of how the natural world worked. He would not have made a distinction between understanding heat and phase changes, and thereby distilling alcohol, and cutting out the intestines of a bird to predict the fortunes of a business venture. Both, to him, were philosophy and natural law. But as our understanding of the laws of physics grew more sophisticated, we gradually exiled the term "magic" to that which had not been proven to work, and to that which had been proven not to work. Were we given the opportunity to take an ancient Egyptian king on a tour of modern society, riding in an electric car, he would remark that we are a rich people, because we have many powerful magicians. Some of us might hasten to correct him, telling him that there is no magic used here. But he would not, in fact, be wrong.

It's becoming super obvious that most people in the US do not like AI. But there's an easy way to fix this. It's actually super simple. AI companies pay for every home's electricity and water bill in the counties where data centers are built. Easy. You literally start proving out the abundance thesis the second those data centers get approved. Per Grok 4.20, there's roughly 50k homes in an average county in the US, with an average yearly utility bill for electricity and water of roughly $3k per year. That's roughly $150m per year per county. Each one of the biggest data center hyperscalers can very easily afford this. You'll have counties TRIPPING OVER THEMSELVES to get a data center built in their region. It's such a no-brainer solution.

It really is almost comical at this point. Iran is under the impression they are winning a war in which they are getting obliterated. They will have to have that impression corrected.
Javad Zarif@JZarif

Want to know why negotiations did not succeed? JD Vance: "they have chosen not to accept our terms." Bingo. No negotiations – at least with Iran – will succeed based on "our/your terms." The US must learn: you can't dictate terms to Iran. It's not too late to learn. Yet.

Eight senior @WSJ and @NYT journalists tell us how they really feel about @ElonMusk in their WhatsApp chats. 1) @KirstenGrind and @TeddySchleifer (both NYT): TS: “I don’t understand why you hate him so much.” KG: “Because he is the beginning of the end for humanity, he is something like the Antichrist.” KG: “So the strategy will be to try to make the billionaires fight amongst themselves and thus dismantle their board of directors.” “if we make the rich fight and play on their egos, we finally win the end of such a detestable person.”
