Let's knock it off with the all-or-nothing hot takes. Good teachers utilize tech ONLY when it gets them the results they want. Foolish teachers (and schools) use tech as their blanket strategy. And tweets like this are rage bait. Don't advocate for bans that take tools out of the hands of teachers and students. Advocate for more responsible instructional decisions based on pedagogy and best practice.

@alicekeeler Yes!! 💯 💯 Not all things need to be done “automatically” by AI.

That is a slick trick to have AI sort them by topic, but that is a critical thinking skill that we should literally be asking the students to do. THEY should organize into topics and justify their reasoning. #DOKchat

@JAustinEDU I’m all for trying to work it out students, when that’s possible. But if it’s a district-owned device I don’t see how limiting what sites can be accessed during class time is a problem. A digital version of “put your phone away” in a sense.

@markifytool Do you genuinely believe this issue is best solved by adding more surveillance ed tech to the mix instead of talking with students and figuring out a solution?

Students in my high school often open multiple tabs on their Chromebooks during instruction. A teacher in our math department defends her policy of allowing this by noting how slowly she has to teach. She says the students who open YouTube are usually the highest scorers, so she leaves them alone as long as they aren’t disturbing anyone.
