Congratulations to my PhD advisor Louis Brus on his well deserved Nobel Prize win for the discovery of QDs! A true scientist's scientist, 100% substance and 0% hype, always seeking out important new scientific questions. An inspiration to so many, and a genuinely kind person!

Building on this thread, Louis Brus has authored multiple papers over the years that stand out in my memory as moments that fundamentally shifted my mental picture of physical phenomena in materials. Some examples:

@KamatlabND @JChemPhys Amazing papers! As a PhD student I recall my reading of both these papers as the “aha” moment when I finally understood - quantitatively - how a QD was different from a cluster/molecule. Gorgeous pedagogical development.

Great to have opportunity to visit with some of the @whitmancollege students doing science research on campus this week! Many thanks to the faculty who provide these great opportunities and to all who welcomed me and explained the terrific work happening this summer !

Excited to have >20 students joining us for summer research in the chemistry department this year! We kicked things off yesterday with a quick break from lab work for coffee, pastries, and introductions:

@ARChianese As someone who has spent a lot of time around both of these elements, I vote too risky. With highly trained research UGs I think it’s totally possible to be safe, but in an UG teaching lab chances are too high for a mistake, and any exposure is bad exposure.

Looking for some opinions: is the toxicity of cadmium oxide and selenium bad enough that a CdS quantum dot synthesis in an undergraduate lab is too risky? The lab has mostly first-year students. JCE article: pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.102…

There’s not enough space in a tweet or even a thread, but @AmerChemSociety choosing the week before Christmas to basically decapitate the news magazine that informs the world about the chemical enterprise is not what you expect to see from a non-profit membership organization.

@ARingerMcDonald These are the types of “innovate teaching of pchem” insights that I want to learn at the ACS symposium!

In my study, I have learned that if you are going to bring the Pchem students snacks to help energize them for their test, the optimal snack combination is a salty snack, a fruit snack, and candy. Be sure to get some non-peanut candy for people who are allergic.

One of these symposia is “Innovative Teaching in Physical Chemistry”, organized by me, @lizz_thrall, @gracestokes, and @markphendricks. This covers all physical chemistry topics (theory and experiment) and all courses (lecture and lab)! Get those abstracts submitted by Oct. 17!!
MolSSI@MolSSI_NSF

The ACS Division of Physical Chemistry is hosting 9 symposia during the Spring 2023 ACS Meeting in Indianapolis (March 26-30). Visit the PHYS website for the complete listing. The abstract submission deadline is October 17. phys-acs.org/event/acs-spri…
