Phil the Company Advisor: I have now signed deals w 23 companies (23!) to be an Official “Advisor.” 21 of those deals were w startups. I am usually paid around 2% (2 points) of the company. Here is how I do it: My “Right place, right time” undefined Advisor role: in 22 cases I made one key introduction that changed the course—at least a little bit, sometimes a lot—of the company. Thus, I earned my points!! These intros are usually unpredictable, and come from my vast network. My defined Advisor role: I work 10 hours a year (one hour per month over 10 months), I help w strategic vision, raising money from non-VCs (huge for startups!), raising money from world’s biggest VCs, and I provide connections to pro athletes, celebrities, and the worlds most successful businessman. My process: 1.) I take a call from a Founder/CEO—who usually comes to me because another Founder that I Advise recommended hiring me 2.) One week later, a take second call 3.) One week later: if I believe in the vision, and more importantly if I believe the CEO can pulI off that vision—I need to know the CEO is all in on 70 hour work weeks and is smart enough to pivot—then we come to terms on an Advisor Deal (1% to 3% of the company). 4.) in 95% of the cases I will invest my own cash into the deal. 5.) immediately after I sign the Advisor deal, I connect the Founder to at least 8 private investors. 6.) when the time is right I connect the CEO to 3-4 VC’s Firms. I only talk to the Founder/CEO’s. They can share everything w me—the good and the bad—and when it is good news, then I can be the cheerleader that their family and friends cannot be (it is hard and a little weird for them to share big successes w family and friends, think about THAT dynamic…). I can pat them on the back and remind them that there is still a long ways to go, like, “Great job raising making that sale, I am proud of you. But, keep your head down we have miles to go before you can sleep!”
