I’ve been watching something creep into Canadian political discourse and it’s starting to feel urgent enough to name. The conspiracy brain that we used to associate with American right-wing media has crossed the border, and it’s made itself completely at home. Trudeau was a WEF puppet implementing a globalist agenda. The trucker convoy was being surveilled by a secret government network. The carbon tax was never about the environment, it was about control. Fifteen-minute cities are a UN plot to trap you in your neighbourhood. Bill Gates is poisoning the food supply. And Mark Carney, who has barely been in office five minutes, is apparently already the architect of a decades-long scheme to hand Canadian sovereignty to unelected global elites. This is the daily content diet of a growing slice of the Canadian right. And it’s not just anonymous accounts. It’s coming from politicians. It’s coming from media figures with large platforms. It’s being repeated at kitchen tables in Alberta and Saskatchewan like it’s common sense. What makes it particularly frustrating in a Canadian context is that there are real things to be angry about. Housing is genuinely broken. The cost of living has genuinely hammered working people. Western alienation is a real and legitimate political grievance with decades of history behind it. You don’t have to invent a globalist cabal to explain why a lot of Canadians feel like the system isn’t working for them. But the conspiracy framework doesn’t want real problems. Real problems have complicated causes and require hard tradeoffs and might implicate your own side. A shadowy global elite pulling strings is so much cleaner. So much more satisfying. The people selling this stuff in Canada aren’t martyrs or truth-tellers. They’re building audiences. They’re raising money. They’re running for office on the back of your outrage. And every time a real policy debate gets swallowed by another theory about Davos or the WHO or 5G towers, the people with actual power over your life get to operate with a little less scrutiny. Canada deserves a serious right-wing opposition. One that argues about tax policy and resource development and federal overreach with evidence and good faith. What we’re getting instead is an import from the American culture war, poorly translated and applied to a country it barely fits. We can do better than this. We used to.

Some nursing homes struggle to attract visitors. One in the Netherlands chose to invite roommates instead. In the Dutch city of Deventer, a retirement home called Humanitas introduced an idea that would eventually gain attention around the world. Rather than accepting loneliness as a normal part of aging, they approached it as something that could actually be solved. For over ten years, Humanitas has allowed university students to live inside the nursing home rent free. In return, the students spend about thirty hours each month connecting with residents. Sometimes that means sharing meals, having conversations, helping with technology, joining activities, or simply keeping someone company during a quiet afternoon. They are not nurses or employees. They are simply part of the community. At first, the idea sounded like a smart response to expensive student housing. But the real impact appeared in the lives of the residents. Reports from outlets such as PBS NewsHour and AARP described seniors becoming more social, more active, and less isolated once younger people became part of everyday life. What makes the story even more meaningful is that many students chose to spend far more time there than the agreement required. Some even stayed connected after graduating. Over time, casual interactions turned into genuine friendships. Humanitas didn’t really create something new. It brought back something many societies once had naturally: different generations living side by side instead of separately. Maybe the issue was never aging itself. Maybe it was the distance we created between generations. Sometimes the most powerful ideas are simply old human connections rediscovered.

The problem isn't the availability of scientific research. It's the flood of people misinterpreting complex data with zero training and full confidence. Access to information is no longer the barrier. Understanding it is.

@katie44121 @raghu_venugopal I second this as a retired RN. I choose to look at my reports online & those of my mother’s (I’m POA) ahead of time, allowing me to formulate questions. I always let the physician interpret the results for me 1st during the visit, before deciding questions that are appropriate.

@raghu_venugopal I do see your point, but as an RN myself I can handle it, and I choose to look at my reports even when potentially impacting current treatment plan. EPIC pt portal does warn pt "report has not yet been seen by care team and results will be discussed at your next appt"

Patients having results before the ordering physician even sees them is normalized in Ontario. So you play catch-up. Time is often spent putting in context a tiny lab abnormality with no clinical consequence. Hospitals have decided this is the best way. cbc.ca/news/canada/ne…

@alandrummond2 Over 35-40 yrs ago, those of us in medical fields learned that as baby boomers & facilities aged, tremendous strain on healthcare would occur. Now layer on effects of pandemics, complexity of care, documentation time. Reports were produced, gov’ts advised…& here we are today.

@Dev09Games @RogerSeheult possibly officials are supporting people to return to their countries, to isolate at home in supportive familiar environments, where reasonably assured of isolation fr others, including family members. Ontario hospitals are short $3.2 billion. They're in deficit and borrowing from banks. The Ontario Hospital Association says it's dire. I see so many ER hallway patients and think about the billions wasted, and I get frustrated. By @a_longhurst policyalternatives.ca/news-research/…

In this randomized Alzheimer’s trial, the intervention was not a single pill or supplement. It was an intensive, comprehensive lifestyle program that included: • A predominantly whole-food, plant-based diet Very low in saturated fat and refined carbohydrates Emphasis on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and soy products • Moderate daily exercise Aerobic activity such as walking Light strength training At least ~30 minutes/day • Stress management Meditation Yoga/stretching Breathing exercises About 1 hour/day • Group support / social connection Regular support group meetings Patients attended with spouses or study partners Conducted multiple times weekly • Sleep optimization and lifestyle coaching • Smoking cessation and reduction of other vascular risk factors when applicable Participants and their partners met by Zoom 3 times per week for approximately 4 hours/session to reinforce adherence and education. The greater the adherence to these lifestyle changes, the greater the cognitive improvement observed. Remarkably, after only 20 weeks: • Cognitive scores improved or declined less • Alzheimer’s blood biomarkers improved • The microbiome improved • The control group worsened across all major measures This is one of the first randomized controlled trials suggesting that intensive lifestyle change may directly influence the trajectory of early Alzheimer’s disease

A randomized controlled trial just reported something remarkable in patients with mild cognitive impairment and early Alzheimer’s disease: After only 20 weeks, an intensive lifestyle intervention group showed improvements in cognition and daily functioning, while the control group worsened across every major measure. Even more intriguing: • Alzheimer’s-associated plasma Aβ42/40 biomarkers improved • The microbiome improved significantly • Degree of lifestyle change correlated with degree of cognitive improvement This was not simply “feeling better.” These were measurable changes in standardized Alzheimer’s assessments. The study was small (51 patients) and longer-term data are still needed, but it challenges the idea that progression in early Alzheimer’s is entirely fixed and untouchable. Lifestyle may matter more than we thought pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38849944/

@tylerwatt @CaptainDick12 Great representation! All areas of nsg practice today are extremely stressful with high burnout. Keep up the good work Tyler! Nurses of ON need this representation desperately… ppl of ON deserve a level of safe care that is not derived the lowest nurse:pt ratios in 🇨🇦

I asked Ontario’s Health Minister what this government is doing to RESPECT and RETAIN #nurses. Instead of answering, she talked about recruitment and alleged nurses who tell her they appreciate her. When I called out the non-answer, she laughed out loud. Ontario nurses are dealing with burnout, chronic understaffing, workplace violence, and unsafe working conditions. There is nothing funny about that. Nurses deserve better. #onpoli #NationalNursingWeek

It is quite surprising to me that almost no one is referencing the most well documented study of Andes virus transmission that we have in which super spreading occurred and droplet/aerosol based transmission was the most likely route for several of the cases. It doesn’t mean that it always happens but it does mean that it can happen. Thankfully all passengers are accounted for and quarantining. But if this were to import here again in the future, and it does not start on a cruise ship, the situation could be very different. #Hantavirus

Why is everyone ignoring evidence from outbreaks of this specific strain that are *very* clear that it doesn’t require prolonged close contact?

You can feel how you'd like about Mark Carney. You can feel however you'd like about the current government. There are plenty of things to discuss and criticize. I will firmly and confidently say as a Canadian, I will never vote for the Conservative Party while it promotes this level of total disrespect and garbage. Mocking and laughing about land acknowledgements is gross. This isn't leadership nor professionalism. It's juvenile, snarky, rude, and frat house bullshit. Jivani wraps himself in the Bible and then says shit like this? This version of the CPC will never, ever have my support, and will be rejected by the majority of Canadians over and over again.
