the downside of reading more books is realising how much garbage gets published that isn’t even on the level of the average fan fic

the reason ao3 exists in the first place is bc a bigoted right-wing mom group destroyed an entire ecosystem of fan work on LiveJournal using the same talking points that you are using right now. That sweep destroyed your good, clean, pure of heart fics, too, bc they were queer.
