Thoughts about Japan: After living in Japan for a few years, the feeling of being a tourist fades away with time. There are many stages that start to arise once I started to understand now I was a local. I do not speak Japanese, I’m slowly learning enough to get around and a few key words like しょがない and めんどくさい. So being in this new world which I am trying to understand is both a fascinating and yet scary experience. There are many rules I don’t know or understand, reading is complicated, speaking too. Fortunately I have an amazing wife who helps me learn and understand my surroundings and feel comfortable living here. Japanese people are mostly kind, I know sometimes they can be shy but they also sense my intentions are good and are willing to help me whenever I need something. In this process of learning how to live here I have found that the key is to be kind. Sometimes I’ll be sitting in the train and see an elderly or someone tired from work and I’ll give them my sit, or I’ll also help when someone is carrying a heavy suitcase up the stairs. Maybe the way I say I want to help is not the right way but they always appreciate it. In the end we are all human, and we all need each other in one way or another. Be kind. Thank you Japan.

Thoughts about Japan: I’m sitting by the Tama River in Tokyo listening to kids playing, as Sakura petals float with the Spring breeze. I see long grass dance with the wind as the river flows. No work, no money, no noise. Just life, Japan is life.

I doubt it, many things have passed from generation to generation which require understanding a lot of historic context and cultural nuances. As a foreigner myself the only thing I can do is ask, research, and observe, there are even times when things just can’t be explained because it’s just the way they are for hundreds of years and no one knows why. This is the beauty of Japan, you will never finish learning about it because it’s so culturally rich so instead of feeling sad about not being able to understand many things, enjoy knowing that at least you got the opportunity to comprehend a few concepts. I hope this helps.

Life in Japan: Exploring this country has been such an incredible experience. As an artist seeing the harmony between people and nature has taught me to see the world in a new way. Japan uses duality to highlight the contrast of everything, light and dark, day and night, life and death. Always teaching us to appreciate what we have in the moment because life passes by. Japan is constantly hit by natural disasters, earthquakes, typhoons, heatwaves… some would think this is scary, yet, this also teaches us to be humble and realize how small we are and fortunate to be alive. Living here, and learning why Japanese people are and think the way they do changed my perspective of life and why being present, and being kind to others matters so much. Thank you Japan.
