@pinglyadya It’s not the size that matters it’s the rings.

@NWeasels @mousquitwo Yeah, at that rate there’d be more money in trading lumber futures than the actual operation. Talking on scale of hundreds of years.

@mousquitwo @pinglyadya arguably, one could plan for harvest of slower growing species, but we're talking forestry planning in the scale of lifetimes, not decades.

@pinglyadya @WhtvrRbrntoo that's a sly switcharoo. The original image shows softwoods, not hardwoods. And earlywood/latewood growth patterns and strength are not comparable.

@WolfChoccy @WolvesSuperfan Yeah it was misworded. More on the lines of “justifying going after what little old growth we have left because they have dense rings when you can get similar usability from non-old growths”

@pinglyadya @WolvesSuperfan “quality of tree rings” is completely meaningless but the quality and durability of wood is directly related to the density of tree rings which is much higher in old growth wood

@pinglyadya @WhtvrRbrntoo Its not even the same species anymore either. The good stuff was longleaf or slash, bur they take too long to mature and get $ for so they sre replaced with shitty ass loblolly

@pinglyadya I don't even get the outrage over it. Yes it is smaller but in real world applications the modern 2x4 works perfectly fine. In what scenario would you even need a "real" 2x4 vs. a modern one?

@tacobellfucks @aleksandertom11 @mousquitwo That’s why wood is treated. Correctly treated wood for the environment it is intended for and correctly maintained can last a LOOOOONG time. The other end is design. You can get around lack of hardwood by changing the design to compensate for load.

@BigGuyHimself @WhtvrRbrntoo “Reaction wood” the tree grows faster to prevent it from toppling due to stress. Parts on uncompressed side get denser rings while other side gets larger so it is stable. You can also get bulging from damage or disease. Water on the otherhand will always shrink rings.

@aleksandertom11 @mousquitwo A 47 year old tree is not uncommon and old-growths start kicking in the 150+ region. For comparison, forests in Europe are pretty commonly human made/cultivated to make that. The part that pisses off foresters is the idea that they were all chopped down and that softwood is bad.

@mousquitwo @pinglyadya True. The 2x4 on the right is from a very old tree of a slow growing species. It took it 47 years to grow that much. Almost all trees like that were cut down, and it takes too much time and effort to grow them for timber. For comparison, growing the 2x4 on the left took 10 years

@WhtvrRbrntoo Not even. You can get hardwood faster by going trees in better environments. Humidity and good soul produced better wood. You can also can get old breeds with huge rings from bad environment or stress.
