Wowzers, you are totally missing the point. You think this means in any way that slaves benefited from being a slave? No. It shows how they would have benefited from using their skills as a free person and just how bad slavery was. The point is these skills could be applied for their personal benefit but weren't!!! If I were a teacher and a student tried to say being a benefited them, I'd flunk them for missing the point, and I'd flunk you, but at least you agree there was no benefit to being slave. Thank God Britain, then the UK, and then the USA were the first empires in world history to outlaw slavery. Today there are potentially more people enslaved than there were back in 1860 in the USA, if we count victims of "human trafficking."
