If the U.S went to war with China tomorrow, they'd have to ask Beijing for help to build the weapons it would be using to fight them!! As insane as that sounds, that's exactly where one of the most fascinating conversations I've had this year ended up. It's a story about what happens when a superpower spends 40 years outsourcing the foundations of its own military. The magnets inside F-35s, the motors inside drones, the guidance systems inside missiles, the radars.... and so on. The electronics that underpin almost every modern weapons system all depend on critical materials that China spent decades quietly turning into one of the greatest strategic chokeholds in modern history. That's a national security nightmare. And it gets worse. From January 1st, 2027, the Pentagon can no longer buy defense systems containing Chinese-origin rare earth materials. Suddenly, America has to rebuild an industrial ecosystem it spent four decades dismantling. And the really wild part is that the U.S. taught China how to process rare earths. Now it's racing to rebuild an industry it once dominated before the clock runs out. Everyone thinks the next great conflict will be decided by aircraft carriers, stealth bombers and hypersonic missiles. But the people building those systems think it may actually be decided by who controls the tiny minerals inside them.
