@punchdouble Success in the music industry ≠ being signed to a major label
For the slow people.. that’s not the definition of making it 😂😂😂 that’s just debt you’re assuring u will get back
You can still get signed & get shelved/ignored/not supported.

I wrote about old rap magazines, the fight for the future of hip hop’s past, and the impact the digital age has had on history, for @DefectorMedia

Hot take. I’m a hater.
Not the jealous kind. The observational kind.
The kind where you hear someone talking and immediately think… aye bro, I know that isn’t even your frame of thinking. I know you for real.
A lot of people right now are just fluent in buzzwords. They learned the language of intelligence without actually doing the work that gives those words meaning.
They didn’t build the foundation. They just memorized the vocabulary.
And look, I respect fake it till you make it. Everybody is trying to survive. The job market is cooked. I get the hustle.
But there’s a thin line between faking confidence and faking competence.
And a lot of people crossed it.
Now the people who are actually about this shit have to walk into rooms and prove we’re not one of the pump fakes. Folks are extra skeptical trying to figure out if our spiel is real. The same spiel some of yall copy pasted from a podcast, a LinkedIn post, or a Twitter thread.
Come on bro.
Because when it’s time to actually stand there at the control cabinet (see pic — a cute haha moment for those who remember this meme) and figure it out in real time… that’s when the panic hits.
That oh fuck what do I do now moment.
Because you never built the foundation. You just learned the language.
And the truth always comes to light.
Now the real ones gotta jump through extra hoops just to prove we’re legit. And let’s be honest. Some of us already have to go above and beyond just to even get into certain spaces in the first place.
So when the pump fakes show up doing performance art with buzzwords, it makes it worse for everybody. Especially your own people.
That’s why I’m tired of rolling my eyes.
This shit is sickening.
Yeah, I’m a hater. Idgaf what yall think.
Because somewhere along the line people stopped asking for prerequisites. Stopped asking for the basics. Stopped asking if someone actually knows what they’re talking about.
Now we got people on Zoom with the confidence of a CEO while picking their nose and eating their snot because they thought the camera was off.
Embarrassing.
Stop it.

As an indie label owner, I want to stress that the biggest reason why we’re creating “walled gardens for fans” is because your favorite artists and indie labels cannot survive off the current royalty structure in streaming. It’s survival driven.
We cannot live off loss leaders.

Great substack on the death of Spotify (as predicted by Jimmy Iovine). Spotify’s business model has been brutal for “middle-class” bands. Recently there’s been movement for these bands to create “walled gardens” for fans, to build relationships w them again. As AI automates and commoditizes more and more, I think this dynamic will happen all over the economy. @joelgouveia/note/p-189070285?r=1ds20&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=notes-share-action" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">substack.com/@joelgouveia/n…

After years of monopolizing the live event industry and overcharging fans, a court has ruled that our lawsuit with @LiveNation will go to trial.
I’ll keep fighting to deliver justice to fans, artists, and venues across the country.

🗓️Calling independent music artists + creators in NYC: March 3rd, we're getting together. Good music, real conversations with our Editors, and a room full of people building something on their own terms.
