A knowledge updateโฆ I was asked about rubber/latex vs ropes and oils used for the ropes. There are different oils or โconditionersโ the riggers use for their ropes varying from baby oil to parafin, horse oil to beewax and camelia oil. Or mixtures of them. I have so far used jojoba oil and most probably changing to camelia oil in future based on the recommendation of @maleshibari
One of my shibari friends raised a question about the possible reactions on rubber/latex. In the photos you can see a test of jojoba put directly on 0.6mm latex (15min exposure); there is indeed some reactions.
I donโt use freshly oiled ropes (only dry ropes) on rubber and so far I havenโt have any โoil relatedโ problems with ropes and rubber/latex.
The more bigger risk to rubber/latex in ropebondage is typically the tension and friction of ropes which can rip the gear.
But be aware of the risks of oil and rope bondage also to the rubbers/latex, so you donโt have unwanted effect on your gear.
Feel free to take part to the discussion.

@LeatherSamFin @blackdesireBD Jojoba oil technically is a wax thatโs just liquid at +6C. Maybe thatโs why the effects on latex are not as strong as with other oils.
Pure silicone oil works great for shining and treating latex. Itโs also nice on the skin - doesnโt get absorbed by it and doesnโt make it soft.
