@oldandrewuk It would be unwise to comment on a specific case without knowing all the details. However, reducing exclusions does not necessarily mean eliminating them whatever the human cost. The majority of exclusions are not in response to such extreme situations and many are preventable.

UK statistics for exclusions are shocking compared to the majority of other countries. If exclusion works so well then behaviour and attainment in our schools should be exceptional in comparison. This is not the case. Maybe we should look beyond our borders for alternatives.

Relationships are what the best schools are built upon. If sanctions break down relationships then maybe the answers are more likely to be found in empathy.

School leaders can work on reducing their exclusion rates without holding the belief that they should be banned entirely. Effective behaviour management strategies, strong relationships and early intervention all play a part in preventing avoidable exclusions.

@reduceexclusion I have just been taken on a new post in a secondary school with the main aim of my role to reduce exclusions and increase attendance where exclusions impact overall attendance. I'd be happy to share what this looks like

Schools can demonstrate their commitment to minimising exclusions through our recognition scheme. We want as many schools as possible to be involved, so initial recognition can be achieved completely free of charge. Find out more via our website. reducingexclusions.co.uk/recognition/

In the run-up to the full reopening of schools, pls spare a thought for the kids who have no school to return to. The ones who had no school place before the pandemic hit. This is likely to be an upsetting time for them. A stark reminder of how different they are to everyone else
