@andyholloway Could also be a motorized damper in the ductwork, which opens/closes to allow air through, or to redirect it to other zones. It’s tied to the HVAC controller and shouldn’t be running if heat/AC is off - is the entire system off? Loose wire/bad damper motor or controller?

It’s Saturday morning so going to unabashedly crowdsource. If any of the much smarter than me homeowners out there can listen to this sound, it’s coming from our attic periodically and sounds like a man with a leaf blower is just hanging out up there. No AC/Heat is on. It’s in a pretty inaccessible part of the attic. Local to this area of the home. Completely confused as to what it could be. Sounds like a pump or motor.
