An MIT study puts the failure rate closer to 95%. Pick your poison; either way, the majority of corporate AI projects are going nowhere fast. Fernando Castanheira, CIO of Riverbed, isn't surprised. "Most AI projects don't stall because of the models," he told me during a video interview we conducted two days after his appearance at the IDC and Riverbed Observability Summit 2026 in Australia. "They stall because the environment isn't ready." That environment problem breaks down into 3 stubborn, interrelated failures: fragmented data scattered across cloud, on-prem, and edge; infrastructure bottlenecks that inject latency and unpredictability; and a plain lack of visibility into what's actually happening across the stack. The model works beautifully in the lab. Then it hits the real world, with its messy hybrid plumbing, and falls apart.
