Global sea surface temperatures, aside from being at a modern-era record high of 21.21°C for the third consecutive day, are also in crazy-town territory for the standard deviation, yesterday at 5.68σ above the 1982-2011 mean. That's 1-in-150 million for a normal distribution.

In a year of very sad news for sentient life, this may be the saddest news yet: "When the sea ice breaks earlier, chicks can fall into the water and drown, or they may drift away on floes and the adults just lose them and then they would starve to death" cnn.com/2023/08/24/wor…

I don't recall seeing this before. I take the 12 month running mean for CO₂ and then compute the growth over the running mean from 12 months earlier, then plot these differences. Also, a trendline. This shows "average" yearly CO₂ growth in a way that smooths things out.

It finally happened, breaking 5 sigma, the same statistical threshold physicists used to prove the existence of the Higgs boson. At 2,700,000 km² below the 1991-2020 mean, Antarctic sea ice extent was 5.14σ below the mean, roughly a 1-in-7,400,000 chance.

When I started reporting on climate change, the prediction was the Arctic could be sea-ice-free in summer by the 2070s. Now? By the 2030s. nytimes.com/2023/06/06/cli…

Why we need to keep algebra central to K to 12 math. 1. Born of practicality 2. Historical and cultural significance 3. Language/circulatory system of mathematics 4. Aids logical and creative thinking 5. Massive importance in today's problem solving

This is hard news to share but a new study from the NOAA just found CO2 levels have hit their highest level in recorded human history. Worse, the RATE of increate is rising. We are in unchartered territory and we do not even fully grasp the extent of the danger ahead. (1/9)🧵
