This is the most exciting thing I've written in one million years. And while the story appears to centre one man, he's only a small cog in a big, big machine we all inhabit. Read, maybe 🔫

In 2025, one of the beneficiaries of Bola Tinubu's presidential pardon was a man you've probably never heard of. We traced the history of his career in fraud all the way back to 1991, when he was first arrested over a Ponzi scheme. Meet Umanah E. Umanah. archivi.ng/the-archivist/…

Every time I walk Yaba market, I use earpods and turn up the music so when traders rush me with propositions, I hear nothing. They could ask if I have an oesophagus and my answer would still be no, as I walk away fast before they get grabby. Last resort is a well-practised scowl.

@Design_toDworld No idea, but based on previous experience: the voter registration closes a certain time (like six months, for example) before an election. So, since Osun has a governorship election before the general one next year, registration timeline there is different from the national one.

In 1993, the West African Milk Company (WAMCO) said a 1992 government policy meant to support local manufacturers was instead hurting its business and giving imported milk a pricing advantage. According to Newswatch, the issue traced back to Decree 13 of March 1992, which reduced import duties on evaporated milk from 20% to 5%. But key raw materials needed for local production, milk fat, skimmed milk powder, butter milk powder, and tin plates, were still taxed between 20% and 25%. The result: it became cheaper to import finished milk products than to produce them locally. WAMCO, Nigeria’s lone milk manufacturer at the time, said this created a “deluge of importation and unfair competition.” Its products, Peak (evaporated and powdered) and Three Crown (evaporated milk), were now competing with cheaper imports like Coast, Nido, Dano, and Carnation, which were gaining popularity due to lower prices. The company also feared that the customer loyalty it had built over the years could begin to weaken under this pressure. In response to the mounting pressure, WAMCO began adjusting its operations by sourcing fresh milk locally from its farm in Vom, expanded into producing cheese and yoghurt, and modified its production process by replacing imported anhydrous animal fat with vegetable fat in its Three Crown brand, a move that made it less creamy than Peak.

@black_obinna @virtuousii If they won't stick to the timetable, it'd have been announced by now. Worst case scenario, the election date change affects card collection timeline, not registration. None of this is to say people shouldn't register now, but they should know it's not the end.

@samson_at @virtuousii You know they have changed the initial election date backwards? So to be safe it’s advisable they register now.

No idea why INEC has not been more present in establishing this, but PVC registration doesn't end this Friday. It's only the end of phase two, and phase three picks up on May 4 until the actual deadline of August 17. That's the official PVC registration timetable.

@Erompleni Not sure sure how anyone is doing anything this time around. Things have been surprisingly tame compared the the past two cycles.

My three-year-old niece was bugging me to watch cartoon on my phone, so for the next two minutes, I educated her on the attention-span crisis of her generation and how I'm training her to be better by denying her screen time. I'm not sure she understood where I was coming from.

In 1991, Nigeria’s student loan system was already in trouble, buried under ₦38.5 million in unpaid debts. According to Newswatch, the Nigerian Students Loans Board (NSLB) had been trying to recover loans dating back to 1972, but after nearly two decades, only ₦3.5 million had been recovered. Many of those who took the loans simply didn’t pay back, and the system had little power to enforce repayment. To fix this, a new board introduced stricter rules: applicants now needed guarantors, proper documentation, and loans would be paid directly to beneficiaries instead of through third parties. But even that didn’t solve the deeper problem. Some of the biggest surprises came from the defaulters list. It included prominent Nigerians, from politicians to senior professionals, and even people who claimed they were listed without their knowledge. Others flat-out refused to pay, arguing the board had no proper records to hold them accountable. A 1988 decree required employers to ensure graduates had cleared their loan status before hiring them, but many employers didn’t even know such a rule existed. So, enforcement collapsed. Meanwhile, the board tried different tactics: hiring law firms (with little success), threatening to publish names (rarely followed through), and even proposing that unpaid loans be converted into scholarships, which it rejected.

Still waiting for that great street-hop Nollywood movie. The way Hustle & Flow, 8 Mile, Menace II Society and Juice made you feel that world, that's what pushes a culture forward and makes outsiders finally get it. We deserve that film.

I've seen some of the most ridiculous pistols (during police parades like this) that were apparently effective enough to do crimes. Ngl I'd have found it pretty difficult to suspend my disbelief if I saw them in films.
