Lee Sang Yeob has been the director in charge of the entire Yumi’s Cells series since 2021, completing a total of three seasons. There was a four year gap before Season 3 was produced. Unlike Seasons 1 and 2, which were released only a year apart, why did this one take so long? The director explained, “Seasons 1 and 2 were originally planned together. Even the animation had already been prepared several months in advance.” He added that due to the huge success of the previous seasons and the high anticipation for Season 3, even though it was not originally planned, more preparation time was needed. He also highlighted Kim Goeun’s growth into a major actress over those five years. Between Seasons 1 and 3, Kim Goeun became even more popular, even becoming a “10 million viewer actress” through the film Exhuma. The director said with a smile, “We weren’t joking, but out of respect we used to call her ‘Daebaeksu-nim’ (great actress).” He added, “She is an actress who quickly immerses herself in her character and genuinely enjoys filming. As a director, it is an honor to work with such an actress.” He also recalled the casting process for Season 1, saying, “I was already confident about Kim Goeun.” He continued, “By Season 3, both of us had developed a strong emotional attachment to the characters.
