Went back to reread the ruling in light of this. As the threshold for urgency has been met Israel has been ordered to cease to do the following things immediately, and to stop its military from doing so too: “(a) killing members of the group [Palestinians]; b) causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; and (d) imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;” Despite understanding that it’s a genocide, not a war, many of us have been pulled into the dominant rhetoric of a ceasefire which presumes that the victims of the genocide are parties to mutual hostility. I was guilty of this too. Neither Hamas, nor any other force in Gaza, were parties to the case, so a ‘ceasefire’ could never have been in the ruling.
