@mineralt0wn my understanding is limited, but both are get areas of legality. fan art is generally ignored by larger IPs because it's free advertisement and doesn't hurt their bottom line, though you have some large names that will absolutely send a cease and desist if they catch you

I promise that I’m asking this question in good faith. But can someone explain to me why monetizing fanfiction is a huge taboo, but monetizing fanart/fan made goods/animation/cosplay is not (and even celebrated)? Is it just a matter of which mediums IP holders choose to go after?

@mineralt0wn whole. we've had multiple novels published that were originally fanfics, yeah, but theyre kind of the exception to the rule, and ff writers as a whole often try to keep their operation quiet to not catch any wandering eyes. in short, ff is just more visible in the grey area
