For #ReliefWednesday we find a panel from a long-demolished #arch which shows the culmination of a triumphal procession: a sculpture of remarkable solemnity and grace, a pause between the bloody war that brought the triumph and the bloody sacrifice in thanks for it. #Rome

Thermopolium of Regio V, one of the snack bars at Pompeii, with an image of a Nereid riding a sea-horse, which had previously been partially excavated in 2019, re-emerges in its entirety, with other decorative still lifes, food residues, animal bones and victims of the eruption.

Although their main duty was to protect the Emperor and his family, the Praetorian Guard also served a variety of other functions: policing events in Rome, fire-fighting and quelling peacetime unrest throughout Italy.

Augustus' public last words were, "Behold, I found Rome of clay, and leave her to you of marble." His actual last words were "Have I played the part well? Then applaud as I exit." Whilst he had an ego, it was arguably justifiable as he ushered in a peace that lasted 200 years
