In this episode of Chalk & Talk, Anna Stokke explores what to do when a math program or education initiative doesn’t seem to work, but you’re told "research shows" that it does. 👉 How do you ask for evidence? What actually counts as evidence? And what happens when people try to shut the conversation down? Based on her ResearchEd Toronto 2025 talk, Anna unpacks the predictable pushback that often follows when people start asking hard questions—and how to respond. #ChalkandTalk #MathEducation #ScienceOfLearning #Education #PodcastTeaser

🎙️New solo episode tomorrow! It's partly personal, but really meant to be practical. How to ask for evidence and how to respond when “research shows” shuts down the conversation. Paired with a guest Substack for the Center for Educational Progress. @EudaimonDave @ThomBriggs

Important lessons to be learned in the difference in how Palo Alto and SF interpreted ed codes and the need to clean up middle school math access in said codes on a state level to stop this from happening again.

The SF math lawsuit is so important to read and understand. Especially the judges ruling. Delaying it wasn't illegal because the ed code is murky for middle. The validation test they gave was the problem and when that was removed things rapidly changed.

The state ed code needs to be modified so districts can't delay the foundation to science and engineering. It's legal not to offer it in middle and that needs to change.
Maya@supes0

@Scott_Wiener Going to keep repeating this Senator until someone listens. Why are districts legally allowed to not offer Algebra I ( foundational class for science competency) in middle school? Ed code needs to modified to require middle schools to offer it. Stop the grandstanding and help

Their hatred for science knows no bounds. It’s why we’re working so hard to advance a California science bond to keep California a global leader in scientific research.

This is incredibly interesting and worth a listen as is everything Barton does. But it’s such a chefs kiss example of what’s wrong w US math Ed and rewarding Ivy League Ed school guys for … just… being spectacular bullsh*t artists. “We need to invite students in to bring their knowledge of things they don’t know yet.” Verbatim. If your kids school uses Amplify Desmos a) it has poor leadership and b) hire a tutor
Craig Barton@mrbartonmaths

I spoke with the fantastic @ddmeyer about AI's potential as a personal tutor, to support teacher development, to assess student understanding, and so much more. To listen or watch the full episode, search for The Mr Barton Maths Podcast wherever you get your podcasts.

@Scott_Wiener @UAW @uaw_4811 I have tried to talk to you about need to modify the ed code to make sure Algebra I is offered in every middle school. Currently the ed code has a loophole which allowed SF and Oak to remove it. Please engage because this is very important. Needs to be clearly defined in code

Science is a pillar of American prosperity, in addition to saving countless lives. Trump is trying to destroy it. We need to rebuild it. That’s why I’m authoring California’s science bond, in partnership with @UAW @uaw_4811 & a massive coalition of universities, scientists & health advocates. California must lead on science & we will do so.

Mathematics is full of hierarchical dependencies. Weaknesses do not just sit quietly in the background. They behave more like cracks in a foundation: the higher you build, the more stress they create.

For math, John Mighton is the real deal. He knows the math inside and out and he developed a charity to help kids learn it. One of the most humble, honest, and genuine people in this space. Don’t miss his talk at researchED. Honoured to be included as a speaker alongside him.

@Scott_Wiener That's not what's going on. Why do we have such high rate of private school enrollment? Mine went k to 12 SF public but thanks to your buddy Matt Haney, and Richard Carranza, Rachel Norton, Sandra Fewer and many others they drove district into ditch it's still trying to get out.

By 2031, California is projected to lose more than one million K-12 students compared to its peak a decade ago — a drop from 6.3M to 5M. There’s a one-word explanation for this steep fall: Housing Fewer students means school closures, fewer teachers, an older population, a depleted workforce & lower tax revenues. Yet people continue to fight tooth & nail against pretty much every solution for building the huge number of homes we need for our state to thrive. There’s always an excuse — neighborhood character, parking, historic preservation, traffic, views. But, bottom line, we either want a thriving state — one with a growing economy, strong public services & a diverse population, including young people — or we don’t. I vote for a thriving future for California. Here’s the data: nces.ed.gov/programs/diges…

This is exactly what I did in 2015-16 ( her 8th) for daughter who was second delayed cohort in SF. She took Calculus in HS and went to strong STEM college ( WPI). I paid to play. How many under resourced children were left behind? SF left a generation of talent on the table.

The NY Equity Coalition is right. Denying access to 8th grade Algebra I to advanced students is deplorable. It is usually done to avoid tracking. Unless all 8th graders are prepared to take Alg I, schools are hesitant to offer Alg I to only those who are ready. Advantaged families will get Alg I in the marketplace. chalkbeat.org/newyork/2026/0…
