▶Reposted from the author's blog with permission.
June is Pride Month.
Around this time last year, from May through August, I was pitching the storyboard for Counterfeit Symphony No. 10 to various publishers.
One thing I heard again and again was:
"This isn't real yuri."
"The character designs need to be more feminine and cute."
"She's too masculine. It's uncomfortable to look at."
As a lesbian whose partner is butch, I often found myself receiving advice about what "proper yuri" should be - from cisgender heterosexual men.
To be fair, this isn't unique to yuri.
BL, seinen manga, heterosexual romance aimed at women - commercial entertainment isn't reality.
That's precisely why someone like me, a lesbian, can write BL based entirely on imagination and fantasy.
And it's why male editors can give advice about lesbian characters to a lesbian creator.
Comments about character appearance, behavior, or marketability - the inevitable "this isn't quite right" feedback - are simply part of the business.
(And of course, if your execution is strong enough, nobody needs to point anything out. Ultimately, creators are responsible for communicating their vision effectively.)
Entertainment is a business.
People pay money for it.
If a creator falls apart every time they're criticized in a meeting and starts shouting "bias!" or "prejudice!" at every note, they're only sabotaging themselves.
If that's unacceptable, nobody is stopping you from staying in the world of self-publishing.
And yet...
Knowing all that intellectually didn't make it hurt any less.
Especially when I heard:
"She just looks like a substitute for a man."
That was a phrase that had wounded me many times in real life as well.
Masculine lesbians exist.
So why does "diversity" so often feel like something we're expected to receive permission for?
I started wondering if my portrayal of Leon was really that flawed.
And the only thing growing deeper was the crease between my eyebrows.
During that period, what kept me going was the television drama Gentleman Jack.
Set in 1830s Yorkshire, it tells the story of Anne Lister - a landowner, entrepreneur, and a figure often described as one of the earliest visible butch lesbians in history (though historians continue to debate aspects of that label).
She is unapologetically butch.
She isn't always a victim.
Sometimes she's selfish.
Sometimes she's the one causing problems.
She can be proud, reckless, frustrating, even pathetic.
And yet she walks forward with her head held high, striding through the world without apology.
Not a saint.
Not an icon carved from perfection.
Just a human being.
Watching her gave me permission to believe:
"It's okay to draw this."
Until then, I had spent much of my life keeping my distance from queer empowerment stories.
Partly out of self-protection.
I'd tell myself:
"I don't need empowerment through entertainment."
"Bright, uplifting queer stories only make me feel worse."
"Reality is painful enough already."
(Though horror films saved me more times than I can count.)
But I was wrong.
Completely wrong.
Honestly, it's a little embarrassing to admit.
Anne Lister gave me courage.
Real courage.
For years I watched Pride Month from a distance.
Thinking:
"Oh, so people actually wave flags and do all that."
I was afraid of being seen as annoying.
Afraid of being judged.
Afraid of taking up space.
But there were butch lesbians before me who stood up during and after the Stonewall era.
Who fought for dignity.
Who refused to disappear.
Because of them, I can sit here today and create the manga I truly wanted to make: Counterfeit Symphony No. 10.
And so, for once, I'd like to add my own small voice.
(And of course, the right not to come out should always be respected and protected.)
For a tomorrow that never needed anyone's permission.
Happy Pride Month.
Thank you.
Truly, thank you.

@VIZMedia This is incredibly disappointing and disturbing. Using AI in your advertisements shows you do not care about the works you are advertising, nor do you care about your audience. We care about art made by humans. We don't want slop. I've cancelled my Viz subscription. Do better.
