In Memory of a Fallen Lion: Major Hassan Mwungeri In the history of the Rwandan liberation struggle, there are names that resonate with a quiet but fierce authority. Umunyabigwi wacu❤️🇷🇼 INKOTANYI CYANE , INTWALI YATASHYE KARE Major Hassan Mwungeri was one of those names. a commander whose tactical mind was matched only by his courage on the front lines. Late Major Mwungeri’s leadership journey took him through some of the most critical units of the struggle. His career is a testament to the high regard in which he was held by his peers and superiors alike: 157th Battalion Before transitioning to higher tactical roles, he served as an OC (Officer Commanding) in the 157th. He worked alongside notable figures who would become cornerstones of the nation's defense, including: Gen Rtd Fred Ibingira (Then Battalion commander) Late Lt Gen Kabandana Innocent (then PC) Gen. Mubarakh Muganga(then serving as OpTO) Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Gumisiriza Wilson(then serving as IO) Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Murokore (then 2IC) 7th Unit (CMF): He later moved to the 7th Unit to take over as the OpTO (Operations and Training Officer). He stepped into this vital role following the loss of another hero, Late Major Nathan Ngumbayingwe, who fell in the Rugende near Kabuga, This CMF headed by Late Bagire. The measure of a commander is often seen in how they lead during pursuit. In July 1994, during the final stages of the struggle, Major Mwungeri was leading his company in a high-stakes operation in Mvuzo, Rulindo While relentlessly pushing back the Adui (enemy) to ensure the liberation of the region, Major Mwungeri was hit. He gave his life in the line of duty, leading from the front, the ultimate hallmark of a Rwandan hero. "A soldier does not die when he falls; he dies when his name is forgotten."
