In the year 1518, hundreds of people danced nonstop until they all died, and nobody could stop them.
It all happened in Strasbourg (modern-day France) when a woman started dancing in the street.
Within a month, up to 400 people joined her. They all kept dancing for weeks without rest.
Some of them reportedly collapsed and died from exhaustion, strokes, and heart attacks.
The most bizarre part was that authorities did not stop it. Instead, they believed it was caused by “overheated blood.”
So, doctors at the time prescribed more dancing as the cure. Musicians were even hired.
Most of them died. And till today, nobody knows why they all started dancing uncontrollably.
The event is known as the Dancing Plague (or Dancing Epidemic). And it happened from July through September.
Strange things have happened!
