The more things we monitor, the more value we get... right? Conclusions from this review of how Sport Scientists & Coaches perceive athlete monitoring: "While athlete monitoring has generally been seen as valuable, coaches and support staff tended to expect the effectiveness to be higher" Proposed reasons for this gap: 🔹 A lack of time, expertise, and resources 🔹 Having to obtain athlete buy-in, adherence and compliance 🔹 Ensuring valid and reliable data collection and accurate interpretation 🔹 Over-hyped marketing claims of athlete monitoring technologies 🔹 Over-simplification of the relationships between monitoring variables and sports performance / injury

From my experience, this scoping review is significant to support the importance of perceiving players as human-individuals (not machines) "athlete monitoring extends beyond quantitative information and encompasses non-quantified subjective information" journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…

Happy to share that I’m starting a new position as a Lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Health at @EdinburghNapier! Thanks to everyone who engaged with me following the tweet below a few months ago. I received a lot of support and that made a massive difference!

Awake at night! Last week: your job won't exist in a few months... Yesterday: your paper, submitted last Oct, and revised 3 times, is rejected... (a thread on this later when I recover from the shock) Time to permanently change career?

@andykirkland71 I’m not advocating to just mindlessly collecting everything and anything but to challenge the idea that data should be immediately applicable.

@andykirkland71 It depends, but not all data needs to be applicable immediately. Some data is only useful over time and for other data our processing methods or understanding is not good enough (yet?). But having that longitudinal data will be valuable whenever our understanding gets there

When data in on individual athletes exceeds the amount that can be processed & applied meaningfully in a ‘complex system’ then is there any point in collecting it?

“One day, the mountain that is in front of you will be so far behind you, it will barely be visible in the distance. But the person you become in learning to get over it? That will stay with you forever. And that is the point of the mountain.” PhD ✅. Let's find a new mountain!
