Judge loses his sh!t and goes after a woman in the hallway. Cassandra Jackson was at the Hamilton County Courthouse (Ohio) to file for a protection order. When told she missed the deadline, she became visibly and audibly frustrated in the hallway. Magistrate Michael Bachman was in his court room and hears the commotion in the hall and rather than having a bailiff go out to to hall to investigate, Judge Michael Bachman takes it on himself. While judges have "contempt of court" powers, they are typically reserved for disruptions inside the courtroom or direct defiance of a court order. In this case, Bachman: Abandoned the Bench: He stopped an active hearing to chase Jackson down a public hallway. Physical Contact: He "guided" her back to his courtroom with his hand on her neck/shoulder for 23 seconds. Summary Judgment: Once back inside, he immediately found her in contempt, leading to a chaotic arrest where she was tackled by deputies. The legal community and the public quickly condemned the Magistrate's "undignified" behavior. Within days of the footage going viral, the court administrator gave Bachman an ultimatum: Resign or be fired. He chose to resign. The Ohio Supreme Court later issued a stayed six-month suspension of his law license, ruling that his actions were a "misuse of judicial authority." Authority in the courtroom doesn't give a judge the right to use physical force in the hallways.
