High VIX = expensive options. Simple as that. VIX above 20-25 means implied volatility is inflated. Every call and put you buy has extra premium baked in. Even if you nail the direction, IV crush can wipe your gains when volatility contracts. This is why smart money sells premium in high-VIX environments and buys premium when VIX is low and quiet. Direction is only half the trade. Volatility is the other half and most people ignore it.
