people used to spend time in their verandahs and connect more with the compound. the outside was part of the home. now, our design language is biased for inside, white box living. we don't look outdoors anymore, and maybe that's part of why it's so easy to cut windows out.

@ted_lade genuinely confused, as well. i've seen the replies to your tweet, but it also doesn't explain why even bigger, newer houses do same.

“Piracy is stealing” has no bearing on capitalism. That is just a fact. You are taking something that’s not yours. We can acknowledge the nuance of people not being able to afford books and even accessibility for willing buyers, but it still stealing. You are right that the conversation to be had is about how we can make more classics accessible and we should, but people taking matters into their hands and arrogantly distributing other people’s hard work should not be celebrated. If you want that for yourself as an author, you can do that, but many authors do not. We speak of most of our greats(writer of the classics) living in abject poverty and their families having little, but encourage systems (piracy) that keep them there.
Samuel A. Adeyemi@samuelpoetry

Scolding people that book piracy is wrong doesn't make you revolutionary. This is not a defence, but your simple stance doesn't solve anything. As an author, writers deserve to be paid. But I believe if you are so invested in capitalism that you refuse to recognise the nuance (1)

Writers pour everything into getting books published. They get only a slice of the revenue, but they're supposed to be grateful that you considered their work valuable enough to steal?

Yet to see a single reasonable justification for stealing someone's book, and putting it on the internet for free, for others to steal. It's one thing to steal. It's another to be defiant about it, contorting man-of-the-people arguments to support your nonsense.

The lesson Obama taught the world when he allowed Gaddafi to be overthrown and murdered AFTER disarming in good faith is that nukes are the ONLY real insurance policy for national leaders. Will Iranians look at what happened and conclude they shouldn’t pursue nukes, or will they instead reason that they should’ve pursued them even mote aggressively, albeit discreetly? Putin has nukes and lives. Kim Jong Un has nukes and lives. Xi has nukes and lives. Pakistan, which sheltered Bin Laden for years, got nukes without anyone noticing, and its leaders sleep soundly at night. Iran’s leaders are dead because they didn’t get nukes fast enough or secretly enough. No amount of war is ever going to change those incentives.

VANCE: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and has to commit to that long-term

That Google Drive link of 200+ novels in the Heinemann African Writers Series is piracy on a grand scale. Truly surreal to see someone so brazenly offer to share it, & for so many to express interest in getting the link. Gross violation of IP by 'supporters' of African writing.

@OpeAdedeji_ Could you kindly point me to it? I've always wondered how much writers make.

Elnathan posted recently on how much writers make on book. It’s close to nothing. FWIW there are a lot of free legal books and stories you can read if you’re keen.

Naming it DoWar genuinely feels like what a 12 yo macho, argggh, ratata boy would name the department. It's transparently juvenile and comical at the same time. So it takes conviction to say no to people who're wired that way. You know, for certain, what's coming your way next.
